School Library Month

School Library Month is celebrated in April every year. Many school library programs celebrate the month along with National Library Week and National School Librarian Day. Libraries play an important role in our lives, and they have long been considered the main center of children’s learning and development. They are home to plenty of books, archives, and educational resources. Children and adults gather in school libraries to demonstrate their appreciation for books, their “storage,” and the work of librarians, as well as to encourage more young readers to pay a visit to the library.
NATIONAL SCHOOL LIBRARIAN DAY
On April 4th each year, National School Librarian Day recognizes the professionals who keep the school library in working order. School librarians spend long hours keeping the library organized. They are also dedicated to helping our children find the resources they need to keep learning. School librarians are the people who create an environment where students can learn every day of the year. Their work is an impressive accomplishment.

Thank you to our amazing Librarians at Lackland ISD!

Occupational Therapy Month – April 2026

It’s time to celebrate Occupational Therapy Month, which is April in the U.S. Occupational Therapy Month is all about celebrating the holistic approach that OT has brought to healthcare. The vital importance of the profession aside, it is also about celebrating the miraculous achievements of their clients, the small steps they take to achieve the things they want and need to do. So let’s celebrate and promote the importance of occupational therapy and pay a tribute to the superheroes who help people get back on their feet!

Paraprofessional Appreciation Day – April 3, 2026

Paraprofessional Appreciation Day comes on April 3 every year. Paraprofessionals are titles given to people from different fields, such as healthcare, education, law, engineering, or human resources. They are supposed to be assistants to the main professionals. Nowadays, though, paraprofessionals are gaining more respect and importance as they are becoming professionals in their own right. They can provide services that meet the needs of particular clients. For example, paralegals, who are licensed by the Law Society of Upper Canada in Ontario, can provide independent legal services to clients and even courts, albeit only in some jurisdictions. They can provide services such as court filings, settlements, auxiliary legal services, and legal research. However, most of the time these services have instructions from a solicitor attached to them.

Parent Square Notifications

Under General Announcements, you can select how often you want to receive notifications for posts. Select Off, Instant or Digest notifications.

Off:no notifications about posts will be sent to you. Emergency Alerts and Notices will still be sent. School Alerts will still be sent if turned on.

Digest:you'll receive an email and/or text and/or an app notification once a day in the evening with all posts from that day.

Stacey Flashback: Jennifer Greiner (Wittler)

by: Harper Higley, 9th grade
flashback
Jennifer graduated from Stacey in 1997! That was the very first Stacey graduating class after Lackland High School was renamed Virginia Allred Stacey Jr/Sr High. Jennifer lives in Kerrville.

1. Did you ever meet Mrs. Stacey?
I did meet Mrs. Stacey on several occasions. She was a great advocate for public education and loved Lackland ISD!
2. What do you do now?
After doing engineering for 9 years, I transitioned to the classroom and am currently a teacher at Hill Country High School in Kerrville.
3. What's one word to describe your personality?
friendly
4. What are some activities you did when at Lackland?
I was an officer in STUCO, Interact Club, and Humanities Club. I played tenor sax in the band, was a cheerleader and volleyball player. It was great to be in a small school where you could participate in everything!
5. Looking back, what is the most important lesson you learned during your time at the school?
Work hard, but also enjoy life and love what you do. It goes by quickly.
6. What was your favorite class?
It's a tie between Ms. Mickey's calculus classes and Ms. Frawley's chemistry classes.
7. What was a specific tradition, event, or school activity you'll never forget, and what made it so memorable?
loved the tIhemed pep rallies and field days. It brought the student body together.
8. Are you still in touch with anyone from your school days?
I still hang out with my bestie from Lackland and thanks to FB and Instagram, I keep in touch with others.
9. What are some places you have lived because of the Military?
My dad was stationed at Lackland (working at Wilford Hall) for about 17 years, so I was one of the rare students who went to school at Lackland from 1st through 12th grade. I was born in Guam and my dad had a short stint in Washington D.C., but I was too young to remember that.

The Pursuit of Perseverance
I was recently working with a young child who had come to me for an assessment. In the middle of our time together, she got hungry and needed a snack. With so much excitement, she pulled out a banana and held it up proudly for me to see.
After admiring her snack, she got to work trying to open it. As you might expect, some bananas are easier to peel than others. I waited for a moment before stepping in because even young children often want to try things on their own. After a few unsuccessful attempts, I offered to help.
Her response surprised me a little. She said, “I think we need to go get Daddy. He can do it.”
That moment really got me thinking.
As adults, we’re often faced with the question: when should we step in and help, and when should we step back and let kids figure things out? Of course, if safety is involved, we jump in right away—no question about it. But I’m talking about everyday situations: getting dressed, opening something, doing homework, building something, or solving a problem.
It’s not always easy to decide. Honestly, sometimes it’s just faster and easier to do things ourselves. But when we take over, we may be taking away an important opportunity for children to learn, grow, and feel proud of what they can do on their own.
So how do children develop perseverance and confidence?
Life isn’t always smooth sailing. There will be challenges—some small, some big. And we won’t always be there to rescue them. When we step in too quickly, we might unintentionally send the message that we don’t believe they can handle it.
Instead, we want to show them how.
Sometimes that means breaking a task into smaller, manageable steps. It might mean modeling how to do something, encouraging effort, and praising persistence—not just the outcome. When children hear things like, “This is hard, but I know you can do it,” it builds their confidence.
Over time, these small moments add up. Children begin to believe in themselves. They learn that they can do hard things. Research even shows that kids who develop grit and perseverance often achieve more—not because things are easier for them, but because they keep trying.
If you’re interested in learning more, you might explore :
Carol Dweck’s works on Growth Mindset or
Angela Duckworth’s research on grit.
And just in case you’re wondering about the little girl and her banana—we talked about trying hard things, shared a few laughs, and she did end up opening it…all on her own.

How Spring Got Its Name 🌸 🌱 🐣

spring
🌱 The spring season gets its name from the verb "spring." It's
a nod to the flowers and plants springing up, springing open,
and bursting into blossom.
🐣 The word itself comes from the Old English word "springan,"
which means "to leap, burst forth, fly up; spread, grow."
🌸 During the 14th century, the word came to describe
the spring season, the time when plants wake from
their winter sleep and bloom.
🌅 Before that, the word "Lent" was used to describe the season: "In the past it was the main word for ‘spring.' Lent surfaced as ‘lencten,' that is, ‘lengten': the season got its name because
